The American Civil War was a four-year armed(1)between northern and southern sections of the United States. Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas—had taken(17)steps.President Lincoln knew that if these(18)states were allowed to leave the Union, it would soon(19). So shortly after he had taken office, it was decided by his cabinet that the Union was to be preserved(20).
