Learning shouldn't be limited to a campus or a classroom anyone . If you have two children and a job, you 're just not going to (1) it to a college classroom three nights a week. And then there's the issue of cost. If you don't have the money to go to a (2)college, does that mean that you shouldn't receive an education? Of course not. You should have a shot at the good life, just like anybody else. The Internet has brought (3) to education. A bachelor's degree or a matter's degree is now available to anybody, anywhere, regardless of a person's position in life. Thanks to the Internet, education is accessible without regard to (4) . You can work toward a bachelor's degree while serving your county on a submarine. And ifs accessible without regard to time: You can take courses after your shift ends, even if that's at 2A.m.What's the (5) obstacle to online learning? It isn't technology. Companies are spending billion of dollars globally to build an online-learning infrastructure that includes undersea cables. And competition among providers is driving price down. The real bottleneck is cultural. What needs to be (6) is resistance to the idea of online learning. The accreditation of Jones International University in March 1999 was a shot heard around the world Nobody (7) that a totally online university could become accrediteD.That even has put real pressure on traditional institutions to move into the Third Wave.Innovative instructors at institutions worldwide are discovering the potential of the (8) environment to deliver instruction of the highest quality to people who would otherwise have limited (9) to higher education. This is an exciting and challenging time in education.Simply defined, online education refers to courses (10) via the Internet. The minimum requirement for students to participate in an online course is access to a computer, the Internet, and (11) to succeed in a nontraditional classroom, Online learning systems have (12) the way people can take classes. Unlike traditional courses in which the students and instructor meet face-to-face once or several times a week, most of the learning activities and communication in an online course are asynchronous, meaning that class members participate in and complete their assignment at (13) times throughout the day and week. This arrangement can make it possible for you to do your class work when it's most convenient for you. However, with this increased freedom and (14) comes responsibility. Without the structure of (15) class meeting, it will be up to you to pace yourself and keep up with assignments.

Big cites today are confronted with very serious problems. Transport is a (1 )difficulty: some planners believe in (2 ) transport system; others believe in making it possible for citizens to move (3 ) in private cars. There are several ways of (4 ) a public transport system. Sometimes it is built under the ground, sometimes it is on the (5 ) , and sometimes it is even above ground level, (6 ) in parts of New York and more crime and Tokyo for example. In most cases, of course, it is a (7 ) of some or all of these elements. The (8 ) of the city centers has also been a problem in the last 30 years. The hearts of many cities have become poorer and poorer, (9 ) more and more crime and violence, (10  ) the people who can afford to have moved out to the (11) . This is the opposite of the situation 100 years ago, (12) wealthy people lived in the center, and the poor lived (13  ) the outskirts of the city.Ecological problems also (14) , as factories and cars pollute the air, tree are cut down to make (15  ) for urban clearways, and crowded conditions cause garbage to (16  ) in the streets. In order to solve these problems, some planners believe we should limit the size of our cities, perhaps by restricting population, or perhaps by offering (17) jobs in the provinces. Others believe that cities cannot be limited in size and that the problems must be solved in a (18) of ways—by creating green areas, building (19  ) houses for everybody, stopping factory pollution, (20  ) motor transport, and so on.

In New Orleans, Moon Walk—a pathway along a stretch of the Mississippi—now provides the public access that had previously been denieD.It's a charming place, where one night recently a band played on the walk as tourists and residents of the adjacent Vieux Carre (the Old Quarter or French Quarter ) strolled past. A few feet west, the paddlewheeler Natchez sounded its whistle, signaling its imminent departure. Now the city plans to extend public access to the area adjoining Moon Walk in an ambitious design that will, the city hopes, be a part of its development for the next world's fair. This more ambitious concept for the waterfront will be likely to stir considerable debate as competing projects vie for the opportunities for profit. The development will therefore require substantial participation, cooperation and scrutiny by citizens to make sure that while private profitability is maintained, the public's needs are satisfied, too.The joint efforts of environmentalists, business-people, civic leaders and politicians have transformed abandoned port landscapes in cities throughout America into exciting commercial and recreational centers. Examples are the cannery in San Francisco, the Riverfront Walk in San Antonio Faneuil hall Market in Boston and Harbor place in Baltimore. It's easy to understand why the port areas were neglecteD.Which many cities were growing up along rivers, lakes and natural harbors, depending on water-borne commerce, waterfronts thriveD.After World War II, however, technological changes in transportation—improved planes and airports, the interstate highway system larger tracks for freight trains and containerized shipping——made many old port facilities obsolete. Waterfront areas became peripheral to the life of the city. Piers were abandoned, and the water¬fronts lay idle in many older cities, paralleling the more general urban decay. With the 1970's came a period of reflection on this condition and a resurgence of urban pride. Urban renewal stopped being a license for large—scale demolition: politicians and planners took a hard look at their available resources and began to experiment with new development techniques. Waterfronts become one focus of the large urban revitalization effort.1.The overall impression of Moon Walk conveyed in the first paragraph is that it is( ) .2.As used in the passage, the word "vie"(Para.2,Line 4)most nearly means ( ).3.The author implies that successful renewal of a waterfront area requires that ( ) .4.Between World War II and the 1970's, waterfronts became( ) .5.The primary purpose of this passage is to describe( ) .

When most people think about changing their body shape, they usually focus on just losing weight. Books and magazines about dieting are among the most popular in the worlD.Dieting is an important part of staying fit and healthy, but losing weight by means of dieting takes time; losing weight too fast can cause great health problems. Dieting means changing one's eating habits to a healthier pattern, but many women mistake the concept of dieting and think that the less one eats, the better. As a result, they lose health as well as weight.Aerobic exercise is a moderate intensity workout that, over a certain period of time, will improve the body's use of oxygen. Nowadays aerobic exercise has become a very trendy workout among youths. Not only is performing aerobic exercise interesting, but it is also very beneficial for health. There are different types of aerobics like jogging, swimming, kickboxing, fitness walking, inline skating, bicycling, etC.Aerobics strengthens the heart and lungs. It is also especially popular with women. But neither of these two methods, dieting and aerobics, can help shape the body. To do this you need to build muscle. So, if a firmer and shapelier body is your goal, 60 percent of your exercise routine should involve strengthening moves, and only 30 percent should be aerobic exercises. For a proper body-shaping routine, you should plan three strength-training sessions a week with weights. Use weights which are as heavy as possible while still allowing you to do 8 to 12 reps of each exercise. Do one to three exercises for each muscle groups-for example, chest and biceps, or back, shoulders and triceps. You should combine this with fast-paced aerobics activities, like swimming, cycling, walking, running, or in-line skating, plan three to four workouts a week, 15 to 20 minutes each, increasing the pace each week.As you build muscle, you may find that you gain weight in spite of all of your calorie-burning exercise. Don't worry. It's probably muscle, which is denser than fat. And muscle is also a calorie-burning tissue. With more muscle, you can burn more calories, even when you are not exercising. When you are trying to build muscle, you need two to three serving of protein a day, but the main part of your diet should be carbohydrates. And in order to get the energy you need for a high-intensity workout, you should eat something, especially carbohydrates, an hour or so before your workout. While weight training will firm and shape your body, it has other benefits too. It improves bone and muscle strength and burns calories, leading to improved health and a higher quality of life.1.Which of the following is NOT true about dieting?2."Workouts "include all the following except ( ) .3.Which of the following is NOT one of the suggestions given in the passage?4.Which of the following is NOT true?5.What's the ultimate purpose of strength-training with weights?

There are three general methods people use to explain and understand their world: beliefs, pseudo- science, and science. What are beliefs? Well, simply put, beliefs are what you believe to be true. In this first method of interpreting man and the world, certain people proved the information about how the world works. Their teachings are beyond question. Their followers accept these beliefs because they want to accept them, not because of scientific evidence. Some examples are religions, such as Christianity. Christians believe in one God, who created the universe and all that is in it. They believe that this God is active in history, guiding and teaching His people. Like many religions, Christianity provides a number of specific moral rules and principles that make up an important part of its teachings. Superstitions, such as Fung Shui, are also common examples of beliefs.Pseudoscience, also called fake science, is any body or knowledge, methodology, belief, or practice that claims to be scientific or is made to appear scientific, but is actually not. In pseudoscience, people accept opinions, or chose to believe certain facts while intentionally ignoring others, resulting in a false understanding of things and events. Beliefs in magic, monsters, and ghosts fall into this category. Both Chinese Qigong and Indian Yoga are very good physical exercises that can help their practitioners keep fit, but when some magical power, they are turning Qigong or Yoga into pseudoscience. Many people fol¬low pseudoscience because belief in magic or mysterious powers is entertaining. Astrology has millions of followers all around the world, not because it helps them deal with the world in any better way, only be¬cause it is just fun.Of the three methods, only science provides a rational way of understanding the worlD.It does not provide a moral system as religion does, and it may not always be as entertaining as pseudoscience sometimes is, but it is the only method that requires constant testing of facts, beliefs and ideas, resulting in changing theories as we get new information. Science teaches us to draw conclusions based on evidence and it also teaches us "that some evidence is stronger than other evidence, and how to judge the evidence. Through our study of science, we learn to accept uncertainty, to question facts and theories, and to search constantly for truth. Most of us use all three methods in different proportions to view our worlD.Some scientists believe in theories without supporting evidence. And the scientific method is often used for unscientific purposes. But science is the only method that is constantly changing. It does not depend on the teachings of one man. Each scientist builds on the work of others and his findings, in turn, are used by others to increase our knowledge of the world.1.Which of the following would be a good title of the passage?2.Which of the following is true?3.Which of the following is NOT true about science?4.Which of the following is TURE about pseudoscience?5.The word "astrology"( Paragraph 3) most probably refers to( ) .

Every year thousands of people are arrested and taken to court for shop-lifting. In Britain alone, about HK $3 000 000's worth of goods are stolen from shops every week. As a result of this "shrinkage" as the shops call it, the honest public has to pay higher prices.Shop-lifters can be divided into three main categories: the professionals, the deliberate amateurs, and the people who just can't help themselves. The professionals do not pose much of a problem for the store detectives, who, assisted by closed circuit television and various other technological devices, can usually cope with them. The professionals tend to go for high value goods in parts of the shops where security measures are tightest. And, in any case, they account for only a small percentage of the total losses due to shop-lifting.The same applies to the deliberate amateur who is to speak, a professional in training. Most of them get caught sooner or later, and they are dealt with severely by the courts. The real problem is the person who gives way to a sudden temptation and is in all other respects an honest and law-abiding citizen. Contrary to what one would expect, this kind of ship-lifter is rarely poor. He does not steal because he needs the goods and cannot afford to pay for them He steals because he simply cannot stop himself. And there are countless others who, because of age sickness or plain absent- mindedness, simply forget to pay for what they take from the shops. In order to prevent the growth on ship-lifting offences, some stores, in fact are doing their best to separate the thieves from the confused by prohibiting customers from taking bags into the store. However, what is most worrying about the whole problem is that it is yet another instance of the innocent majority being penalized and inconvenienced because of the actions of a small minority. It is the aircraft hijack situation in anther form. Because of the possibility of one passenger in a million boarding an aircraft with a weapon, the other 999 999 passengers much subject themselves to searches and delays. Unless the situation in the shops improves, in ten years' time we may all have to subject ourselves to a body- search every time we go into a store to buy a tin of beans!1.Why does the honest public have to pay higher prices when they go to the shops?2.The third group of people steal things because they ( ) .3.According to the passage law-abiding citizens( ) .4.Which of the following is NOT true about the main types of shop-lifting?5.The aircraft hijack situation is used in order to show that ( ) .

By far the most common difficulty in study is simple failure to get down to regular concentrated work. This difficulty is much greater for those who do not work to a plan and have no regular routine of study. Many students muddle along, doing a bit of this subject or that, as the mood takes them, or letting their set work pile up until the last possible moment.Few students work to a set timetable. They say that if they did construct a timetable for themselves they would not keep to it, or would have to alter it constantly, since they can never predict from one day to the next what their activities will be.There are many who stay away from the self-regimentation of a weekly timetable, and dislike being tied down to a definite program of work. Many able students claim that they work in cycles. When they become interested in a topic they work on it intensively for three or four days at a time. On other days they avoid work completely. It has to be confessed that we do not fully understand the complexities of the motivation to work. Most people over 25 years of age have become conditioned to a work routine, and the majority of really productive workers set aside regular hours for the more important aspects or their work. The "tough-minded" school of workers is usually very contemptuous of the idea that good work can only be done spontaneously, under the influence of inspiration. Those who believe that they need only work and study as the fit takes them have a mistaken belief either in their own talent or in the value of "freedom". Freedom from restraint and discipline leads to unhappiness rather than to "self-expression" or "personality development". Our society insists on regular habits, time keeping and punctuality and whether we like it or not, if we mean to make our way in society we have to comply with its demands. 1.The most widespread problem on applying oneself to study is that of ( ).2.According to the passage, there are many students who ( ) .3.Those workers with strict views on work ( ) .4.In Paragraph 4 "as the fit takes them" means ( ) .5.A suitable title for this passage might be ( ) .

How many things can you see in the night sky? A lot! On a clear night you might see the Moon, some planets, and thousands of sparkling stars,You can see even more with a telescope. You might see stars where before you only saw dark space. You might see that many stars look larger than others. You might see that some stars that look white are really red or blue. With bigger and bigger telescopes you can see more and more objects in the sky. And you can see those objects in more and more details. But scientists believe there are some things in the sky that we will never see. We won't see them with the biggest telescope in the world, on the clearest night of the year. That's because they're invisible. They're the mysterious dead stars called black holes. You might find it hard to imagine that stars die. After all, our Sun is a star. Year after year we see it up in the sky burning brightly, giving us heat and light. The Sun certainly doesn't seem to be getting old or weak. But stars do burn out and die after billions of years. As a star's gases burn, they give off light and heat. But when the gas runs out, the star stops burning and begins to die.As the star cools, the outer layers of the star pull in toward the center. The star squashes into a smaller and smaller ball. If the star was very small, the star ends up as a cold, dark ball called a black dwarf. If the star was very big, it keeps squashing inward until it's packed together tighter than anything in the universe.Imagine if the Earth were crushed until it was the size of a tiny marble. That's how tightly this dead star, a black hole is packeD.What pulls the star in toward its center with such power? It's the same force that pulls you down when you jump—the force called gravity. A black hole is so tightly packed that its gravity sucks in everything—even light. The light from black hole can never come back to your eyes. That's why you see nothing but blackness. So the next time you stare up at the night sky, remember: there's more in the sky than meets the eyes! Scattered in the silent darkness are black holes—the great mystery of space.1.According to the article, what causes a star to die?2.Which of the following statements is NOT a fact?3.What happens AFTER a star dies?4.Why can't you see light when you look at a black hole?5.What is the main idea of the article?
