Deep inside a mountain near Sweet water in East Tennessee is a body of water known as the Lost Sea. It is listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest underground lake. The Lost Sea is part of an extensive(广阔的)and historic cave system called Graighead Caverns. The Caverns have been known and used since the days of the Cherokee Indian nation. The cave expands(扩展)into a series of huge rooms from a small opening on the side of the mountain. One mile from entrance is a room called the “Council Room” in which many Indian artistic facts have been found. For many years it had been considered that there was a large underground lake somewhere in the cave, but it was not discovered until 1905. In that year, a l3-year-old boy named Ben Sands crawled(爬行)in-to a small opening three hundred feet underground, and he found himself in a large cave half filled with water. Today tourists visit the Lost Sea and ride far out in glass-bottomed boats. More than thirteen acres of water have been mapped out so far and still no end of the lake has been found. Even though teams of divers have tried to explore the Lost Sea, the full extent(范围) of it is still unknown.1、The Lost Sea is completely different from any others because it is ________.2、The Graighead Caverns have been known ________.3、Who discovered the Lost Sea in recent times?4、What was found in “The Council Room”?5、It can be inferred from the passage that the Graighead Caverns presently serve as ________.

Nowadays, people have a heated discussion on whether the pressure on international sports players kills the essence of sport-the pursuit of personal excellence. Children kick a football around for fun. When they get older and play for local school teams, they become competitive but they still enjoy playing. The individual representing his country cannot afford to think about enjoying himself; he has to think only about winning. He is responsible for the entire nation’s hopes, dreams and reputation. A good example is the football World Cup. Footballs the world’s most important sport. Winning the World Cup is perhaps the summit of international sporting success. Mention Argentina to someone and the chances are that he’ll think of football. In a sense, winning the World Cup put Argentina on the map. Sports fans and supporters get quite irrational about the World Cup. People in England felt that their country was somehow important after they won in 1966. Last year thousands of Scots sold their cars, and even their houses, and spent all their money travelling to Argentina, where the finals were played. So, am I arguing that international competition kills the idea of sport? Certainly not! Do the Argentinians really believe that because eleven of their men proved the most skillful at football, their nation is in every way better than all others? Not really, but it’s nice to know that you won and that in one way at least your country is the best. 1、According to the passage, if a sportsman only thinks about winning, he will ________.2、The main idea of the first paragraph is that ________.3、What does the speaker mean when he says “In a sense, winning the World Cup put Argentina on the map”?4、The word “irrational” in the third paragraph means ________.5、What does the underlined word “summit” mean?

A Lost RingAbout once a month I have to go to Bedford for my work. One day I went into a hotel there to have something to eat. The waiter took my coat and put it in a small room. About an hour later I was ready to go. The waiter brought me my coat. Something fell out of the pocket onto the floor. It was a small white box. I took a close look at the coat. “Oh, you’ve brought someone else’s coat,” I said to the waiter. “It looks very much like mine, but it is quite new, and this isn’t my box, either.”“Oh, then I suppose someone has taken your coat and left his,” said the waiter. “This kind of thing happens sometimes.” I opened the box. There was a beautiful gold ring in it. The waiter and I decided to go to the police station. “Has anyone lost a ring?” I asked at the station. “Yes,” said a policeman. “A young man who came in this morning lost a ring; he lost it in London. “He telephoned the young man. A few minutes later, the man arrived. “Yes, this is my ring,” he said. “How can I thank you, sir? You see, I paid a lot of money for this ring and then I lost it on the train!”After I told him the price of the coat, he said, “You haven’t been on the train. I haven’t been in the hotel, so how did my ring get in the coat?”“Did anyone sit or stand next to you on the train?” asked the policeman. “Yes,” said the young man. “But I don’t remember his face.”“You may remember this coat,” said the policeman. “Was it like this one?”“Yes, it was,” said the young man. “But my friend here isn’t the thief.”The policeman laughed. “No,” he said. “The thief on the train stole your ring, and like our friend here, he went into the hotel to get some food. Only he didn’t take the right coat away with him.”1、Why did the waiter pick up the wrong clothes?2、Picking up the wrong clothes happens in hotels ________.3、Who is the real owner of the coat?4、Who lost the gold ring?5、What kind of person is the author?

Flying over a desert area in an airplane, two scientists looked down with their trained eyes at trees and bushes. After an hour’s flight one of the scientists wrote in his book, “Look here for probable metals.” Scientists in another airplane, flying over a mountain region, sent a message to other scientists on the ground, “Gold possible.” Walking across hilly ground, four scientists reported, “This ground should be searched for metals.” From an airplane over a hilly wasteland a scientist sent back by radio one word, “Uranium.” None of the scientists had X-ray eyes: they had no magic powers for looking down below the earth’s surface. They were merely putting to use one of the newest methods of locating minerals in the ground—using trees and plants as signs that certain minerals may lie beneath the ground on which the trees and plants are growing. This newest method of searching for minerals is based on the fact that minerals deep in the earth may affect the kind of trees and bushes that grow on the surface. At Watson Bar Creek, a brook six thousand feet high in the mountains of British Columbia, Canada, a mineral search group gathered bags of tree seeds. Boxes were filled with small branches from the trees, and roots were dug out and put into boxes with each bag and box carefully marked. In a scientific laboratory, the parts of the forest trees were burned to ashes and tested. Each small part was examined to learn whether there were minerals in it. Study of the roots, branches, and seeds showed no silver. But there were small amounts of gold in the roots and a little less gold in the branches and seeds. The seeds growing nearest to the tree trunks had more gold than those growing on the ends of the branches. If the trees had not indicated that there was gold in the ground, the scientists would not have spent money to pay for digging deeper. They did dig and found more gold below. When they dug deeper, they found large quantities of gold.1、Scientists were flying over a desert, or hilly wasteland, or a mountain region in order to search for ________ in the ground.2、The study of trees, branches, and roots indicates that ________. 3、Which may be the best title for the passage? ________.4、Based on the passage, all of the following are mentioned as part of a tree that can help find minerals except for ________. 5、The scientists were searching for minerals by using ________.

Why do we laugh? For years scientists have asked themselves this question. No animals laugh and smile—only human beings do. So, does laughing help us to live longer? The answer seems to lie in that smiling and laughing help us to become less worried and calm, preventing illnesses that are fitted by stress. Laughing is really the best medicine. But if you’re unhappy, it can’t do you any good to smile, can it? That’s not true. It is clear that smiling works just in the same way whether you feel like smiling or not. Scientists in California asked a group of students to act five different feelings: happiness, sadness, anger, surprise and just using their faces. Changes in their heart rate, blood pressure and temperature were recorded. Most of the feelings they acted didn’t cause changes, but when the students smiled, their heart rate and their blood pressure went down. That happened even though they were only acting. So even if we feel sad inside, smiling seems to make us feel better. Now, what makes us laugh? It seems that the answer to the question is far from simple. Everyone likes jokes, but we don’t laugh at the same ones. It depends largely on how old we are. There are some jokes, for example, that children love but older people might not find funny.1、In the first paragraph, the underlined word “stress” can be best explained as “________”.2、Which of the following statements is TRUE based on the passage?3、In the passage, the writer seems to pay more attention to ________.4、The passage tells us that smiling and laughing ________. 5、According to the author, ________.
